A shift of focus: redefining success beyond money

Walking away from the corporate path

Nine months ago, I walked away from my job with a clear ambition: to build my own business and prove—to myself most of all—that I could create something independently.

The truth? The business is not booming. It doesn’t yet generate enough revenue to cover its initial setup costs. And still, I believe deeply that once I direct more focused energy toward it, it has the potential to grow into something meaningful.

Choosing presence over pressure

Last night, sleep didn’t come easily. Earlier that day, I had once again decided to delay stepping fully into “businesswoman mode” and pushing for clients—for another month.

Again.

A holiday planned months ago is approaching, and another family emergency has surfaced. Instead of building my business, I am choosing to be with my family.

From career first to family first

After decades of putting my corporate career ahead of family and friends, my priorities have shifted completely.

Now, business plans pause when family needs arise—whether it’s a birthday, a long-planned holiday, an emergency, or simply being present because my presence brings comfort and stability.

Why I left a well-paid job

One of the core reasons I left a well-paid corporate role was to reclaim control over my time.

I no longer want to tell my son I can’t travel with him because I need to save holiday days for the Christmas and Year end. I don’t want to tell my husband I can’t join his trip because it wasn’t scheduled months in advance. I don’t want my life dictated by board meetings or corporate urgency masquerading as importance.

Now I find myself moving from one family gathering to another, spending much more quality time with my husband.

Rethinking wealth in a material world

A friend once told me that real wealth is being able to remove your golden handcuffs when there is nothing else left to gain.

In a patriarchal, materialistic society, success is often measured purely in financial terms. And while money is undeniably important—I believe it is essential for stability and peace—it is not the only form of wealth.

What stepping back gave me

What I have gained by stepping away from being a high earner is the freedom to show up.

I can take several days off for my mother’s birthday. I can dedicate a full day to helping a friend think through her business challenges. My own business can wait—and surprisingly, that feels right.

Living with uncertainty

Of course, doubt still appears. The voice that says, You haven’t made real money in nine months.

We are conditioned to believe that achievement means climbing higher, earning more, building faster. I followed that narrative for years.

Until I chose to step off.

A different kind of life

Now I find myself living a very different life. I promote this blog on Instagram—me, who once refused to even sign up for social media, including Facebook.

We are in our fifties, carrying degrees, careers, and experiences many only dream of—and we’ve chosen a slower, more intentional way of living.

I am deeply grateful that I can afford this shift. I am deeply grateful that I can afford this shift in focus.
